CUNY & The Washington Center Semester Long Internship in Washington, D.C. FALL 2008
Internship opportunities for CUNY students extend beyond the borders of New York City and State. CUNY has partnered with The Washington Center to offer a semester-long internship program in the nation's capital. Now in its 31st year, The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars is an independent, nonprofit organization serving hundreds of colleges and universities in the United States and other countries by providing selected students challenging opportunities to work and learn in Washington , D.C. for academic credit. The largest such program, with more than 60 full-time staff, The Washington Center has over 35,000 alumni, leaders in numerous professions and nations around the world. The recruitment, selection and placement of The Washington Center interns is undertaken by the Program office, along with faculty members from CUNY's senior colleges. It is a highly competitive and intensive program that offers CUNY students the opportunity to work in the offices of U.S. Representatives and Senators, congressional committees, federal agencies, and at a variety of national and international non-governmental organizations. CUNY Washington Center students work full-time at their placements and are provided with a stipend to offset their living costs. CUNY covers all program fees and housing costs. In addition to their office responsibilities, interns fulfill the academic requirements associated with the program by maintaining a journal of their daily experiences, submitting written reports to their Washington sponsors, attending weekly colloquia which feature prominent members of the Washington D.C. community, writing reaction papers to those colloquia and producing major research papers for evaluation by the faculty at their home campuses.
